Itâs been a while my people, I trust youâre all well. Iâve been spending my brain writing another book, so I havenât really had the inspiration to write to you lately. Today however, I woke up thinking about something. We often talk about obedience and we preach about it, but have we truly learned the ways of obedience? What does it really mean to obey God, and why should we? If He gave us free will, shouldnât we just do what we want? I donât know about you, but Iâve had moments where I knowingly didnât obey. It wasnât a âmistakeâ I was fully aware that I wasnât obeying. Sometimes I obeyed, but only in my own timing. Sometimes I delayed. Sometimes I questioned why. Sometimes I threw tantrums.
The topic of obedience is a serious matter because, if we really think about it soberly, our obedience to God benefits us more than it benefits Him. It is for our own safety. Obedience keeps us within the will of God, and in doing so, keeps us aligned with His Spirit. Letâs look at an obvious example: Abraham. The man had a family, friends, and probably an entire life established in his hometown. Then one day God simply says, âLeave.â
We may read that story and think, whatâs so difficult about that? But remember, God didnât hand him a full proof plan. He said, âI will show you where Iâm taking you.â People who have never moved to a foreign land may not fully understand what it takes to start a new life somewhere with nothing but the word and promises of God. Recently, one of my friends got married and relocated to another country. That takes both a leap of faith and obedience. How does a man trust Godâs voice without seeing physical proof, get up, pack his life, and leave simply because God said so?
Looking at my own life, Iâve lost money trying to do things my own way. You know, the Bible says the men who were with Jonah on the ship lost their cargo and goods because of one manâs disobedience. The fact that your disobedience can affect your family and even the people around you should be an eye opener to how important obedience truly is. Most of the time, obeying God does not make sense to the natural man because how can Way B possibly be better than Way A? Way A looks perfect. Way B looks rocky. How is it a better option?
How do you obey when God says shut down a business that is bringing profit? How does He say marry the foreigner, marry Ruth? How does He tell David, âYou will not build for Me, your son willâ? If it were some of us, with our misplaced zeal, we would have argued and insisted, âNo, I will build this for You,â thinking it is proof of our love and devotion, when in reality it would be outright disobedience.
What about obedience with our resources? We place demands on God for wealth, yet our ten percent hasnât made it to church in months, maybe even years. We place demands on God for a spouse, yet we have not obeyed Him with our bodies. We still take His temple to strange beds and lie down with unbelievers. We hear âfast and pray,â yet we choose our own way. We hear âdo not,â and we do it anyway. We hear âdo,â and we âdo notâ. Itâs even in the way we mishandle the visions and life plans He gives us. God knows why He brought you up in that family and in that specific way. He knows why you had to be from Greece or Zambia. He knows why you had to have those parents. He has it all planned out, and so when He gives a command or instruction, it is fitting for your purpose.
It is painful to want something and not receive it, but it is far better to go without it and remain aligned with God. Obedience, as I have discovered, is often a one man journey with God. God told Abraham, so Abraham could not leave the decision to Sarah or Lot. God tells you, âStart the organisation.â Your friends may advise you, but you still have to keep in step with the Spirit because not every instruction is a group instruction. Learn to discern when an instruction is for you and when it is for a collective. Donât rush to announce your consecration to everyone around you. Imagine Abraham gathering his entire family and friends saying, âLetâs move,â when God had only spoken to him.
âHis mother said to the servants, âWhatever He says to you, do it.ââ
John 2:5 NKJV
Obey God. Obey God more than man. Obey God more than books, motivational speeches, and quotes. Obey God even when it is painful to leave. Obey God even when it costs you to detach. Obey God in the storm and obey Him in the sunny days. Obey with tears in your eyes or laughter in your mouth. Obey Him when there is only a little flour left for you and your son. Obey Him when He says lead the stubborn people. Obey when He says borrow the jars & borrow not a few. Obey when He says pour the oil. Obey when He says stay, stand, walk, talk, be silent, get up, sing, or dance.
People of God, whatever He says, do it. Mary told the workers, âWhatever He tells you to do, do it.â The key words are, whatever, He, do it. No matter what it is, if He said it, you must do it. âWhateverâ means no matter how big or small, hard or easy. Provided God is the One who said it, you must do it. Not contemplate it endlessly, not weigh it against your own opinions, but do it.
See you tomorrow, my yielded people. I love you.
